Hey Ken --Yeh, I was not a little bit concerned about looping the bike...I knew it would lite off if I dropped the clutch at six five or seven with me standing on toes , but I was not sure what would happen next---I was really strong then , so if the front came up , I would still be sitting on the tank ..when I finally sat down , it did come up , and I allowed it to take off , but the tire was so melted , it just wandered around forever and left a track that was visible for a year , let alone the trench it dug in the asphalt....the fire dept. showed up a few minutes after we left... It took all the next day to clean off the melted rubber from the bike --I am dead serious--the smoke was 15 foot high and 40 foot long---It was amazing to me that I made the 1/4 mile home on tire cord...WayJay

Latest update :Am still trying to fit the rear wheel , making 6061 alloy spacers , aligning the sprockets and the bike -not so easy...this is interrelated with the silencer mounts, that are now on the fourth reincarnation --it is not a little hilarious to realize your lack of perception, once something is actually built, to see exactly ( I use the term loosely), how it could be better ---JJ

Am done with the rear wheel -but am lookin at the fender that is way high off the tire --I believe the shocks can travel only about 2 1/2 "---so , am gonna cut the frame so that the back loop is lowered about an inch , leaving 2 3/4 "clear to the fender --any body ever done this?-any insights?--I intend to bang out a seat pan --JJ--PS, gonna post over on the BOC--will see how that goes------

Frame mutilation , ETC.--no response over @BOC--the deal is that I do not think the excessive clearance from the rear tire to the fender looks all that great , so am gonna make a cut in the frame loop underside, and bend it down for maybe 2 3/4 " clear, and reweld. no big deal.     I made good progress on the front stanchen caps, made so there will be fender mounting taps on both front and back (retro type look )......was thinkin, I would drill the axles to save weight , but am not sure what I can get away with --Perhaps, 1/4 " wall was more than enough , maybe even 3/16ths--Any thoughts on this would be most welcome --Am gonna post some pics, when I get a little further along --the front end is lookin pretty cool --WayJay

My thoughts on this one - a step too far. I'm not a structural engineer, but my experience leads me to these thoughts. To drill the axles would probably weaken their impact strength as I imagine they are made of solid bar as they are just standard steel. However if this is definately a route you want to take, surely with your fabricating skills you could machine new axles out of some exotic, lighter and stronger/superior modern material?

I'm with Stevie on this axle thing , on lowering how about some shorter shocks,if that works for you then think about cutting frame ..

Just got back from motor home trip up to Arkansas - Missouri border region...HOT there ...wireless internet there sucks too.

Thanks Stevie &Tex--I'm not sure about this either, but that front axle is a chunk @ 1 LB, 7OZ  Will Lettcha what I find out ---JJ--(UHH.. multiple personality disorder , perhaps...)

Hi Way-Jay, a man's bike and how it looks is a very personal thing, but i'm not sure about your plans for lowering the mud guard mate, i think you will lose the symetry between the guard and the tyre if you don't do some major fettling, you'll probably end up with a totally new custom guard

It's a personal thing though, but i think a T140 sits just about right, admittedly the wheel and tyre look a bit skinny by today's standards, but our bikes are from a different era.........and we love 'em because of it

Have not been doing as much as I should --But, Have drilled the front SS fender to accommodate a front stay ( made froma stock back stay)--Ken's kind comments are right in line with what I am thinkin , but I do believe I may have a solution  --the front stay goes all the way down to the new slider cap that I made , that has front and rear stay mounts - not done yet , but , was able to put two peices on the lathe and bore--Good thing a friend gave me an adjustable reamer , as the Axel diameter is a little weird @ 887 Thoughsents.. On another post I was complaining about making alloy tops for my Amal M2's to replace the plastic ones --I never have really cut inside threads  that big before , but my 1952 atlas lathe ( with quick-change box ) performed admirably--no thanks to the dictator at the controls--So now I have the inside , I still need to do the OD----Way Jay
